Lefty's Weekly Top Ten (12/6/06)

Is it Wednesday already? Man, I work one evening and my entire week is thrown out of whack. Here is this week’s Top Ten:

1. Rainbow Six: Vegas (XBOX 360)

I am still playing this a lot, and soon I’ll get to compete against my wife on the game. Oh, I will so ‘own her’ on the game! I recently moved my 360 over to a LCD computer monitor and I am now enjoying the game even more with the graphics looking greatly improved.

2. Sufjan Stevens “Songs for Christmas”

Much like I know summer is on when I pull out the Allman Brother’s “Back Where It Begins”, Christmas is now underway having found a Christmas album that captivates me. People in my “Circle of Friends” mix project will get to hear a few cuts of this fantastic collection in what I’m dubbing my Merry Chris-mix December Disc.

3. Battlestar Galactic (SciFi Channel)

Wow, who would a’thunk it? An episode with nary a Cyclon, human-looking or metal becomes one of my favorite episodes of the series. This compelling episode is set in a boxing ring and with it a lot of human baggage. All of this makes for a compelling hour of drama, another reason why this is (for now) the best show on television.

4. The Amazing Race (CBS)

All my favorites are gone, but this is still my favorite reality game show. I’m already looking forward to next season’s All-Stars installment.

5. Doctor Who Season 1 DVDs

I’m halfway through the first season of this exceptional, very British, Sci-Fi show. It’s pretty interesting but I do find myself falling asleep if I try to watch an episode in the early evening. What I do catch when I’m conscious is enjoyable, and I really dug the Dialek episode.

6. Beatles “Love”

I play this a lot when I’m playing Hexic on my Xbox 360. The mix-mash of Beatles songs goes well with this Tetris-like game. It’s become like a soundtrack to the game.

7. Heroes (NBC)

This show gets better with every episode. I think I have one more episode to get caught up on, but the Sylar introduction was very good. Sure the series feels like it borrows lots of the same tricks Lost and even Smallville employs, but does so in a way that feels like there more method in their madness (not to chagrin a great show, but sometimes I feel like Lost meanders at times), a no monster-of-the-week (the Smallville suffers horribly from).

8. Cheap Trick “Sex, America, and Cheap Trick”

It’s been a long while since I’ve listened to this excellent box set. For some reason I felt compelled to throw it on my iPod, and boy howdy I’m glad I did! I’ve been listening to this constantly at work as of late, and for some reason the music has just clicked with me.

9. The Office (NBC)

I’m catching up on my “front room” viewing. Let me clue you in on the chaos that is Mrs. L and my viewing patterns. Mrs. Lefty plays her Xbox in the front room (or the living room). Until just yesterday I played my 360 in our bedroom. All of Mrs. L’s shows she watched get recorded on the Comcast DVR in the bedroom. It’s a TIVO like machine that is easy for Mrs. L to set up recording schedules. A lot of my favorite shows get recorded on our recordable DVR in the “front room”, which is more like the VCR recorders of old. Mrs. L and I play a lot of Xbox, so often times I’ll have 4 or 5 episodes of shows to get caught up (or in the case of The Daily Shows usually two months of episodes). I usually do so on weekend mornings as I’m reading the paper and Mrs. L is still sleeping. Anyway, that is the long-winded way of saying that I am have been loving gorging out on the funniest show on T.V., The Office.

10. One Punk Under God (Sundance Channel)

I caught the first episode of One Punk Under God on iTunes (for free no less). It’s a reality show featuring Jay Bakker, the son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. I’ve long been intrigued with what Jay has been doing. A lot of my Youth ministry and Church planting friends look up to his style and definition of what “church” is. The first episode was quite good, and I’ll be catching future episodes. It wasn’t without its flaw though. I thought the “sermon” he gives in Wisconsin felt more like a self-therapy session that a sermon. However I liked a lot of show.

looking forward to some of the Sufjan Stevens stuff - I've been hearing quite a bit about it, but haven't had a chance to listen yet.

I have to say last week's Office may be my favorite ever (at least of our version). and I've been hopelessly hooked on Heroes since episode one - it fills a hole that's been in my tv schedule since Buffy went off the air. hadn't heard about the Jay Bakker show, I'm wishing we got Sundance here. Tom's brought home a few of his talks from different things and I have a lot of respect for what he's doing.
