Lefty's Friday Three Questions for December 8th
It's going to be a fast one from me today. I'm all stressed out with a lot of problems to fix, and a good deal of running about town. And tonight I think I'll have to spend some time mending fences with Mrs. L who has recieved the brunt of my frustration for no good reason.
The end of the year is fast approaching, time to take a quick look back:
1. In comics or books, has there been anything out this year that really "blew your mind" that others must check out?
2. What's been your favorite music moment so far this year? (It can be a new CD, a concert experience, etc)
3. Today is Gregg Allman's birthday, so in celebration, what's your top five favorite Allman Brothers songs or covers they do?
Comments
1. IN books, I don't know if it was published this year, but the Bono book had a major impact on me. In comics, Nextwave Agents of H.A.T.E. tickled me in ways I never thought possible....and I loved it!
2. Hmmmmmmm, tough one. It may be seeing Bruce Springsteen do his best Pete Seeger impersonation or it could also be a fantastiv mind-blowing Gov't Mule show I saw in San Francisco.
3. Blue Sky, Desdemona, Walk On Gilded Splinters (a cover), Mountain Jam, Jessica

1. Edward P. Jones' short-story collection All Aunt Hagar's children. Jones is crazy good.
2. Audra McDonald's new CD, a gorgeous collection of mostly pop and a few theater songs.
3. I don't think I could name five Allman Bros. songs.

1.I can never keep up with when the books I've been reading were published, so I'm just going to with the best book I read this year, which is Kim Stanley Robinson's Years of Rice and Salt. Mind-blowingly good.
As for comics, either the long awaited Castle Waiting collection or finally catching the Scott Pilgrim wave.
2. One of the coolest things ever were the FREE concerts our public library sponsored featuring Iris Dement, Dar Williams, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
3. What Tosy said.

1. No. I graze on books, leaving them half-read.
2. Just today, I was listening to an old Eddie Mitchell album, Ed-clectic, and hearing the "hidden track", possibly for the first time, I laughed out loud. Liberal, indeed.
Also, my favorite song that I actually received this year may be Barnacles from SpongeBob SquarePants.
But I haven't gotten the Beatles' LOVE album yet...
3. Elizabeth Reed, Hitching Post, Melissa, Ramblin' Man; nope, I can't name five AB songs, either, without looking.

1. Comics - I think the Transformers had Bruce on the cover on #14 in 1985. Wow!
2. Pearl Jam's 'best of' double disc and an AMAZING 1976 of Handel's 'Messiah'.
3. Chris knows that five songs just can't cut it when it comes to our favorite band, but here goes: Blue Sky, Liz Reed, Mountain Jam, Jessica and High Cost of Low Living (to include a great new tune)

1. There hasn't been a lot in comics that has blown me away this year; Criminal comes to mind, as well as that trio of Ellis books: Nextwave, Fell and Desolation Jones. As far as books go, I'm almost finished with Kavalier and Clay, only 3 years after I bought it! That's an event as far as I'm concerned...
2. Perhaps the most memorable musical moment I had this year was just a couple of evenings ago: a Christmas performance of the Bowling Green Western Symphony Orchestra. As far as recorded music goes, I haven't bought a lot of new stuff this year, instead getting reacquainted with old favorites. This may go down as the year Johnny B learned to appreciate Joe Walsh. Who knows.
3. Melissa, Jessica, Pony Boy, Wasted Words (yeah, I like Brothers and Sisters), and One Way Out. I like Midnight Rider, too. Just five, eh?
