Lefty's 20 Favorite Albums of 2006 (Part 7)

The big finish! Drum roll please...

Finishing out the year as my favorite disc of 2006 is....

1. Nashville by Solomon Burke

In 2006 the King of Soul laid claim to another throne, located in the heart of country music, Nashville, TN. Producer Buddy Miller, invited Solomon down to his place for a few days, and gathered a bevy of country talent to create an album that simply amazes. Solomon Burke is no stranger to country music. His first R&B hit was a cover of a country song, and he even mentions in the liner notes that he grew up on country music on the radio. This collection of country and Americana songs (it even includes a Springsteen cover) is filled out with duets with Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, and Patty Loveless. Burke's voice injects a passion into the lyrics, and you can feel his investment in the songs. At 66 years old Burke remains a powerful singer that clearly loves the material he is belting out! The album features some amazing, rollicking numbers which are balanced out by the quite moving ballads. It is simply a fantastic country album that is miles above anything that Nash-Vegas is turning out these days. With the amazing work on Nashville, Solomon Burke reigns as 'King of the Hill' at the top of my Top 20 favorite albums of 2006.
