Lefty's Weekly Top Ten (07/26/07)
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
All in all a very exciting end to a series. I loved the tension in the book. I felt like in any chapter calamity would fall and no one would make it out alive. It'll be interesting to see how the series holds up over time with the soap opera, so to speak, now ended. Look no spoilers!
2. Bad Brains "Build A Nation"
Bad Brains have finally crafted an album worthy of their name. A very nice mix of punk metal and reggae. They really show why they were the spark for HarDCore. I have loved playing this album as I play Xbox 360, or checking in serials at work.
3. The Closer
Not only do I get to enjoy this great summer series on TNT, but I just found out that it was available in HD on Comcast On Demand. The season has really interested me, because the social dynamics are slowly changing a bit, which is adding some tension to the squad.
4. Chromehounds
I play an awful lot of this game on the weekends. A lot of my friends are on the game so we spend hours trying to help our adopted country win the Nerimous War...in cool f'n mechs!
5. World War Hulk #2 and World War Hulk X-Men #2
I already like this event comic so much more than of the Marvel Events since...well since Secret Wars II. (Come to think of it, we NEED a Secret Wars II Essential book or two). WWH is the equivalent of a good summer popcorn film. You get all those action sequences you've seen before, but this time they are amped up a notch. The Hulk is seriously pissed and while I'm not looking for any lasting repercussions, I am getting fangasms over the face-offs. Even the limited series World War Hulk X-Men is entertaining. Issue two has about two pages of exposition and another 20 or so of just killer Hulk on X-Men battles. And everyone is throwing down with the Hulk. I wouldn't be surprised if Banshee crawls out of his grave just to get his ass kicked by the Green Goliath. A lot of dumb superhero poundage that is strangely very satisfying.
6. Bomberman Live
After playing the demo for this I didn't know if this was going to be a game that I would have fun with, but I spent my 800 Microsoft points (about $10) and since then I have been playing this constantly. The basic premise is you use bombs to blow up other players, using powerups and strategy. I love that you have a lot of power to make your character different, and the games different. I can play a quick two minute game or a long game requiring many wins. There are different modes I can play, my favorite is Zombie in which you use your bombs to paint tiles, and the player with the most painted tiles at the end wins. I haven't played this on Xbox Live yet, but I intend to very soon.
7. The Daily Show/The Colbert Report
Still playing catch up on the shows. I am still about a month behind.
8. Dune: House Atriedes
Now that I finished off Harry Potter, I am now diving into the entire Dune series even the less than stellar ones not written by Frank Herbert. Now I've probably read the 6 Dune novels about 6 or 7 times in my lifetime, but I'm real excited about the next read-thru. This might keep me reading Dune until Thanksgiving, but frankly I am looking forward to finding out how Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert close out the Dune story after Chapterhouse: Dune.
9. Hulk Visionaries: Peter David v. 1
I've also begun reading the Peter David historic run on the Incredible Hulk. Marvel has been collecting the run in TPBs, and I've heard so many good things about the run, I decided I'm gonna read them. Maybe after I finish that off I'll start reading the Visionaries of Fantastic Four featuring George Perez and John Byrne.
10. Black Sabbath: The Dio Years
I am seeing Black Sabbath in October, so I recently picked up this Best Of collection of the Ronnie Dio era of Sabbath. I threw it on my Xbox 360, and it has been my gaming accompaniment along with the Pantera Best Of. There's some really cool stuff, even at times its a little Metal Paint by Numbers (Lyrics-Guitar Solo- Scream- Repeat).
